Nigeria woman given 15 years in jail for drug trafficking in Malaysia

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) — A Nigerian woman was given 15 years in jail by Malaysia’s High Court on Monday after she pleaded guilty to an alternative charge to avoid being sentenced to death.

The woman, identified as Queen Amaechi Iwuala, 29, was charged with the possession of 2.8 kilograms of methamphetamine at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport two years ago.

Judge Akhtar Tahir ordered Iwuala, to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest on October 22, 2010.

Initially, the woman had pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence.

She then changed her plea in order to avoid being put to death, court officials told Bikyamasr.com on Monday.—www.shafaqna.com/english
