Facebook and Twitter campaigns in support of Palestinian hunger strikers go viral

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – Hundreds of Facebook and Twitter users have changed their profile pictures on Monday as part of an electronic campaign in support of Palestinian hunger strikers detained in Israeli prisons.

Users changed their current profile pictures for an avatar representing a man or a woman blindfolded.

The campaigns initiated by the General Federation of Independent Trade Unions in Palestine and Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association come as an agreement has reportedly been reached in Cairo to put an end to the hunger strike Palestinian prisoners.

"An agreement was reached in Cairo today [Sunday] on a proposal to end the hunger strike of the Palestinian prisoners," Issa Karaka, head of the Palestinian prison authority, told Al Jazeera.

"We are now waiting for the hunger strikers’ committee to determine their position".

The main points of the agreement will ensure an end to solitary confinement of prisoners, allow families of prisoners from Gaza to visit and put an end to the renewal of "administrative detention," which allow Israel to detain individuals without charges or trial.

Israel's prisons service says that 1,550 Palestinian prisoners are currently on hunger strike. Palestinian activists however say that as many as 2,500 are currently on hunger strike. – http://shafaqna.com
