SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) — Hundreds of people Wednesday staged demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the killings of Muslims in parts of lower Assam.
In July 2012, the India’s Northeastern state of Assam saw outbreaks of violence between indigenous Bodos and Bengali-speaking Muslims. 73 people have died and tens of thousands of people have been displaced from almost 400 villages.
Under the banner of Jama'at Ulama-ye-Hind, hundreds of people registered their anguish and distress over the massacre of Bengali speaking minorities in lower areas of Assam.
Carrying banners, depicting solidarity with the Muslims of Assam and condemning their massacre, people raised slogans against the Assam Government.
Earlier, addressing the protestors, Mamood A. Madani, General Secretary and Mohammad Usman President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, in one voice condemned the heinous crimes perpetrated against Muslims.
While offering condolences and expressing solidarity with the victims, they said: “The JUH views with grave concern the recent ethnic and communal riots in Assam, which were planned, organized and continued for several days, as very shameful and holds the Assam government responsible for them.
“It is the gravest humanitarian crisis and worst ever violence against a particular community in the history of Free India,” noted speakers. They further said that never in the history, have such a large number of people been displaced and forced to languish in camps. It is a blot on the face of India’s secular character.
Later-on a memorandum, demanding quick rehabilitation of all displaced people by arranging their return to their original places, was presented to the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
While demanding to scrap the Bodoland Autonomous Treaty as it was against the interest of the non-Bodos in trouble torn Bodoland Territorial Administered District (BTAD), the memorand umasked for the adequate security to Muslims and other non-Bodos who are still in BTAD areas.
“Hateful propaganda against Muslims as Bangladesh Muslims should stop and all the real facts about it be kept before the people. All stakeholders are encouraged to work together in creating a congenial atmosphere that would constitute the peace between the two rival communities,” read the memorandum
A copy of memorandum was also presented to the President of India .
Over the decades, Assam state has witnessed at least six major spell of riots between Bodos and Minorities. The first took place in 1996 and it caused loss of 50 people. This was repeated in 2008. —www.shafaqna.com/englis
